Chapter Four

He flew in loops about the forest, burning away his irritation. Ariel, he reminded himself again and again, was not to be trusted. And what did it matter if Oberon had been in love before?

But, oh, oh, how he simmered at the thought of some tall, rakishly handsome guard seducing his master years before Puck had even laid eyes on him. How dare he? How had he accomplished it? Surely, even in his youth, Oberon would have been too introspective to fall for a pretty face and a few beguiling words? No, no. Far more likely that Ariel’s dubious methods of parenting had left Puck’s master starved for love, and he’d latched himself onto the nearest source of affection. Yes, that was it. The wretched seducer had preyed upon the vulnerable prince, and then, when he was finished with him, he’d cast him aside. How dare he?

And worst of all, to think Oberon had been so desperately in love that he’d been on the verge of surrendering his crown, his princely status. Oberon loved ruling, was born to rule, would not be Oberon if he were not royalty. He had remained in a loveless marriage all these years purely because to pursue divorce would likely end in his losing his place as king. Certainly, Puck could not imagine that Oberon would ever surrender his crown for his sake…

Puck shook such evil thoughts off and made another loop before heading back to the tree. By the time he finally found Oberon, his mood was utterly rotten.

“Never, not in a thousand years, will you believe what your father just said to me,” he huffed as he dropped down to the branch upon which the fairy king was carefully inspecting a new cluster of leaves.

“Since your entrance into my life, my capacity for disbelief has been beaten into submission,” Oberon muttered, absorbed in his search. “Go away. You’re not supposed to be helping me.”

“I’m not helping you; I’m airing my grievances. Your father just insulted both you and the queen to my face, and then he asked me to be his chancellor. Can you believe the nerve?”

Oberon shrugged, still not looking his way. “He’s always liked to get his hands on my things. Often in the past, when I’ve dismissed someone from my service for some or other misdemeanour, he’s snatched them up and made them his.”

“Aren’t you outraged?” Puck asked, coming to hang off his arm. “He tried to buy me, like a mare in a mortal marketplace. It was infuriating.”

Oberon shook him off with a grunt. “Outrage can wait. I still have roughly one million leaves to examine and no desire to spend a second longer in my father’s court than necessary. Ignore him. Whatever you do, don’t provoke his ire. And now leave me in peace.”

Puck flew off in a huff for the second time that day.

Hours later, he sat nestled amongst the thorns of a wild rose bush, not far from Ariel’s tree. It seemed a good place for brooding, which was just as well.
